Like a Moose on a Wire

Now, you're asking yourself, "Hey, how did that moose get up there?" Was it some kind of stupid, drunken moose bet? Is it one of those life-sized joke moose you can buy at the It store? Is it protesting the clearcutting of power poles? Has it been watching Mel Gibson movies? Perhaps it's not a moose at all, maybe it's a caribou, which would explain everything because, you know what they're like. Well, it is a live moose, caught by its antlers in wire, fifty feet up a power pole in Alaska. Read this to find out how.

There are suspicions that U.S. President George Bush sometimes gets EIDA (ear-implant debate assistance). Now, here's photo evidence that he also has something strapped to his back. Very Coolpix

The video that accompanies The Sad Song by Fredo Viola is amazing. Viola used Adobe After Effects to stitch together a series of 15-second clips he shot with his Nikon Coolpix camera. The multi-frame result is a motion panorama that works beautifully with his music. The clip takes forever to download, but is worth the wait.

Head Trip

This is a sign in Jackson Square in downtown Hamilton. It's the second "SHROOM" (formerly "WASHROOM") sign I've seen in the last month. The first was an outdoor washroom in Port Elgin. I assume this is a deliberate drug prank. Anyone else seen any of these around? Send pics or news of sightings.

Freelance: 1, Globe : 0

I was pleased to see that the Ontario Court of Appeal has ruled that the Globe and Mail does not have the right to publish freelance stories in its online database. The outcome is the latest development in a case against the Globe launched by freelancer Heather Robinson. How the paper ever imagined it had the right to electronically reuse, at no cost (but considerable profit) the work of non-staffers, is beyond me. The Globe may still appeal the ruling. If they do, it will just continue to demonstrate how out-of-touch they are.

Your Mojo and My Mother

Metafilter brings news of a bizarre blog by Kevin Francis. Okay, it's not really written by Francis, it's generated automatically by a PERL script (a programming language) that Francis wrote. Here's a sample:

I dont mind sanitary towels. Read my lips!! Today I am studying your feelings your mojo and my mother and I also want to learn more about the state of sanitary towels!!!!!!!!

Francis just took the output of his program, hooked it up to a blogging utility, gave it a few topic ideas and let it hold forth. Check out I am Learn, to read daily entries by the wacked teenaged code-blogger Francis has given birth to.

Crap for Nerds

Each year about this time I look forward to the Hedonics catalogue that comes with the Globe and Mail. It's, page after page, filled with photos of dumbass gizmos for the life-challenged. It's the sort of tech-junk that the guys in the bottom half of the industrial design sheltered workshop came up with. Who really needs a solar-powered house number, a Nite Lite Kettle, an electric boot warmer or a Robot Alarm Clock with Memo and Pen Holder? Still, the Microwavable Health Socks on Page 27 do seem like a great idea, especially if the electric boot warmer breaks down.
